Mashaba has wished the national team the best of luck ahead of their two crucial encounters against the Blue Sharks
Former Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba is banking on Stuart Baxter’s men to get all the maximum points in their back-to-back 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Cape Verde.
“They must get all the six points out of the two matches against Cape Verde to make things a little bit easier for us going forward,” Mashaba told SowetanLive.
It was Mashaba, who started the qualifying process as head coach, earning a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso away before guiding Bafana to a 2-1 win over Senegal in his final game.
He was dismissed for gross misconduct, insubordination and violating his employer’s communications policy, but Mashaba has put all that behind him.
“I am very much behind the team. Nothing has changed with regards to my passion and love for South Africa. I cannot work against any South African national team or individual competing on the international stage because they represent me,” Mashaba said.
Mashaba has also pleaded with the nation to give Quinton Fortune a second chance with the team. The former Manchester United midfielder joined Baxter’s technical team as one of his assistants.
“We should not compare today and yesterday. People should not judge him based on what he did at the time he was a player but they must look at what he can offer at the moment. He did that when he was still a player and it can happen that he is a changed person now. Now he is a coach and he deserves another chance at Bafana Bafana,” Mashaba concluded.
