Kanyemba: An isolated tribe in Africa has people with “ostrich foot” – a condition that leaves them with just two toes. The Vadoma people in Zimbabwe’s Kanyemba are born with a bizarre deformity.

As many as 25 per cent of the children in the tribe are born with two toes that point inwards, making their feet look like claws.

The rare condition is called ectrodactyly, which is characterised by absence or malformation of one or more of the fingers or toes.

The Vadoma people marry within the tribe and thus, the condition is passed down generations.

One in every 90,000 people outside the tribe are said to be affected by the unusual condition.

The Vadoma refute claims that link their condition to “witchcraft and sorcery,” and instead assert that their unique traits were bestowed upon them by God.

As per the legend of the Vadoma tribe, their ancestors were large birds that came from a planet named Liitolafisi and settled on the Earth with the humans.

YouTuber Drew Binsky visited the Vadoma tribe recently and shared his experience in a video. A teenager shared how difficult it is to live life with two toes as he cannot buy shoes. Walking long distances can be very painful for him.

The Vadoma people can climb trees with “exceptional” speed. The boys play football as good as five-toed people.

The Vadoma are typically “shy” due to enduring ridicule and mockery for their unique two-toed condition. The tribe has an increased number of cases of the deformity because they marry within the community.

Similar conditions have been seen in tribes like the Talunda and Taluta Kalgana of the Kalahari desert, with researchers believing that they all have a shared ancestry.
