UJ student-athletes earn podium finishes with USSA national teams

University and college students from the Africa Zone IV competed in various sporting codes during the 2024 Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) games in Tshwane from 7 to 12 July 2024. The six-day eclectic sports showdown had students from Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe competing for top prizes in chess, netball, table tennis, football, netball and basketball at the Tshwane University of Technology and University of Pretoria.

Several University of Johannesburg (UJ) students represented the participating South Africa teams.

Athletics Dominance:

Phemelo Note, a UJ Athletics Club star, clinched gold in the 10km race and silver in the 5000m. Mahlatse Dombeni and Sisanda Dumisa also contributed to South Africa’s medal tally with podium finishes, winning two silver and bronze medals each in long jump, 10km and 5000m races, respectively.

Basketball Success:

UJ basketball stars Nyeleti Nyathi (women’s) and Nino Dim, Sbonga Mkwanazi, and Thabang Ndlovu (men’s) showcased their skills on the national stage. The SA women`s basketball team won 90-57 to beat Zambia in the final, while the men’s team was knocked out by Zambian men’s team in the semi-finals with a 68-73 final score.

South Africa’s netball team, featuring UJ’s Muhluri Hlatshwayo and Nomfundo Mngomezulu (also the team’s flag bearer), dominated the competition, securing a gold medal with impressive victories over Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. They won with overwhelming scores to clinch the title after winning 96-30 against Zimbabwe in the final. In the group stages, the SA netball team won 92-30 against Zambia, 93-24 against Malawi, 75-10 against Botswana, and 86-16 against Zimbabwe. Nomsa Zungu was the assistant coach for the netball team.

Vuyani Kula and Dylan Munenga contributed to South Africa’s bronze medal finish in chess.

CUCSA was established in 1989 under the auspices of the Supreme council of Sports in Africa zone IV. The organisation was mandated to provide an environment that stimulates the development of sports in member countries, as well as regular competitions among members states.
