The Solidarity Center works with the labor movement in Zambia to protect the rights of workers and their ability to engage across the democratic civic space, through worker and civil society organizing and support for their participation in national governance processes. The Solidarity Center’s core partner is the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and its 36 affiliated unions.
The Solidarity Center’s work in Zambia helps strengthen the capacity of trade unions and civil society organizations (CSOs) to engage with the government around issues and processes that matter most to workers and citizens, and to advocate for government transparency and accountability, internet freedoms and worker rights. It helps build bridges
across organizations.
To help build strong trade union and CSO coalitions in Zambia, the Solidarity Center supports and creates opportunities for organizations to network and lead collective advocacy and actions that push the national government to protect workers’ and citizens’ democratic and digital rights. It facilitates joint awareness-raising initiatives and alliance partners’ advocacy training, and trade union and CSO alliance meetings with government officials and governance structures.
With its union federation partners, the Solidarity Center supports gender equality training, gender-based violence and harassment awareness-raising campaigns, and the call for the Zambian government to ratify ILO Convention 190 on harassment and violence in the world of work and for the enactment of inclusive policies such as the “Access to Information” (ATI) Bill, “Anti-Corruption Commission Act” and the “Public Order Act.”
