Caracas, July 22, 2024 (venezuelanalysis.com) – Venezuela’s 20th International Book Fair (FILVEN) took place in Caracas between July 11-21 and gathered thousands of attendees.
Culture Minister Ernesto Villegas organized the event alongside the National Book Centre (CENAL). Considered one the country’s largest annual cultural events, this year the book fair featured 97 national and international exhibitors distributed in a hundred stands at Caracas’ National Art Gallery (GAN).
“It is said easily but this is the 20th edition! The book fair is a creation of Commander Hugo Chávez, a legacy that has not stopped in the most difficult circumstances and that, on the contrary, has grown and will continue to grow,” said Villegas during the inauguration.
In this edition, South Africa was the guest of honor with the participation of 18 South African authors, representing diverse regions and literary genres. The country’s presentation theme was “30 Footprints of Freedom. South Africa’s Literary Strides Towards Democracy and Beyond”.
On Thursday, Venezuelan authorities, along with South African diplomats and authors, came together to pay tribute on Nelson Mandela International Day, reflecting on the revolutionary legacy of the iconic leader.
The South African ambassador to Venezuela, Lindiwe Michelle Maseko, praised the FILVEN as an opportunity to unite cultures. “This fair has allowed our authors to interact with their Venezuelan colleagues and to show South Africa’s melting pot of nationalities through its literature and dialogue with the Venezuelan people”.
The event likewise featured multiple book presentations, among them author Jorge Ramos Tolosa’s “Palestine from the Epistemologies of the South” about the Palestinian people’s struggle for national liberation.
The 20th FILVEN edition will now travel on to other states around the country.
