Celebrating 30 years of Hospice Africa Uganda

In November 2023, the Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) 30th celebration took place at UCD. A 3km walk was organised around the UCD Belfield campus. Talks were delivered by the Hospice Africa Ireland team and two HAU Nurses, Roselight Katushabe and Dianah Basirika, who travelled to Dublin to share their experiences and the importance of continued support for HAU. Dr Merriman joined via Zoom from her home in Kampala.

Over €20k was raised on the day which will ensure this vital work is continued by Dr Anne Merriman and the entire team.

After graduating from the UCD Medical School in 1963, Dr Merriman was sent to work at St Luke’s Hospital, Anua, in south-eastern Nigeria. In 1990, after being back in Ireland for a period of time, she returned to Africa, initially to Nairobi Hospice, before founding Hospice Africa.

At the celebration, Dr Merriman’s talk focused on the history of palliative care and the HAU. You can view Dr Merriman’s recording here. The passcode to access is: Z@5Z6#V0

Micheál Martin, Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Minister for Defence Ireland shared a video address celebrating the HAU, Dr Anne Merriman and UCD School of Medicine’s involvement. You can view his address here.

Congratulations to all involved in a wonderful celebration.
