Tunisia manager Jalel Kadri steps down after AFCON elimination

Tunisia manager Jalel Kadri has parted ways with the Eagles of Carthage following the team’s elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Following a 0-0 draw with South Africa, Tunisia found themselves bottom of group E with only two points to suffer a group-stage exit for the first time since 2013.

They became the third African giants to depart the Ivory Coast early after Ghana and Algeria, leaving just Morocco and Egypt as the only representatives of the North Africa region.

The exit means that Jalel Kadri’s reign as Tunisia’s manager comes to an end as the coach revealed that his contract stated that the team must reach at least the semi-finals.

Kadri now becomes the fifth manager to lose his job as a result of the 2023 AFCON, following Chris Hughton, Djamel Belmadi, Jean Louis Basset, Jalel Kadri, and Tom Saintfiet.

Speaking after the elimination, Kadri said: “It was destined, and whatever God wills. We had faith in the team and sought to achieve positive results. We aimed to reach at least the semi-finals.

“I take full responsibility for what happened.”

Regarding the South Africa draw, he said, “We could have made a difference, especially in the first half.

“We tried to attack with the largest number of players and created numerical superiority, but we were not successful, and possession does not necessarily mean scoring goals.

“We had three chances in the first-half, including a cross, but we should have been faster and more effective.

“The defeat against Namibia in the first match affected us psychologically and morally, we should not have lost that game.

“We improved against Mali, and today against South Africa, we were better offensively, but we lacked efficiency.

About his future, he said, “My contract stipulates leaving if we do not qualify for the semi-finals. This was my last match with Tunisia. This is my contract, and this is my decision, and I take full responsibility.”
