CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The National Hurricane Center says a tropical wave near the African coast could develop into at least a tropical depression over the weekend.
The wave was located several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and was producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms Thursday. It was moving to the west at 15 to 20 mph.
A tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to develop several hundred miles east of the Winward Islands.
The chance of formation over the next 48 hours is 60%.
If it becomes a tropical storm, it will take the name Beryl, the second name in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season list.
