Influenza

During Epidemiological week (Epiweek) 3, 20 countries from the 5 influenza transmission zones1 in the WHO African region (WHO AFR) contributed virological data for analysis – Algeria, Burkina Faso,
Cameroon, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana,
Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Togo, Uganda,
United Republic of Tanzania, and Zambia. During Epiweek 3, 1748 specimens were collected, and 1735 were tested for influenza.

• In the Eastern Transmission Zone, 723 specimens were collected and 711 tested for influenza by 7 laboratories#.
Seventy-two (72) specimens tested positive for influenza virus, with a positivity rate of 10.1% (Figure 2). Influenza types and subtypes identified in the zone included:
A(H1N1)pdm09 (n = 5), A(H3) (n = 59), B(lineage not determined) (n = 5), and B(Victoria) (n = 3). In this transmission zone 4/7 countries had positivity rates >10% (± 1%): Mozambique, 18.7%; Rwanda 26.4%; 9.6% Madagascar and Tanzania 14.1% with A/H3 predominating in each of the countries.

• In the Middle Transmission Zone, 186 specimens were collected and tested for influenza by 3 laboratories#. Twenty-one (21) specimens tested positive for influenza virus, giving a sub-regional positivity rate of 11.3% (Figure 2). All the positive specimens originated from Cameroon with a national positivity rate of 16.4%, a decrease from week 2 (18.9%). Influenza types and subtypes identified in Cameroon included: A(H1N1)pdm09 (n = 7), A(H3) (n = 1), and B(Victoria) (n = 13).

• In the Northern Transmission Zone, 193 specimens were collected and tested for influenza by the laboratory in Algeria. Fifty-five (55) specimens tested positive for influenza virus, with a positivity rate of 28.5%, a decrease from week 2 (39.3%). (Figure 2). Influenza types and subtypes identified included: A(H1N1)pdm09 (n = 48) and A(H3) (n = 7).

• In the Southern Transmission Zone, 107 specimens were collected and 106 tested for influenza by the laboratory in South Africa. Five (5) specimens tested positive for influenza virus, with a positivity rate of 4.7% (Figure 2). Influenza B Victoria was detected in the South Africa this week.

• In the Western Transmission Zone, 539 specimens were collected tested from 8 laboratories#.Thirty-one (31) specimens tested positive for influenza virus, with a sub-regional positivity rate of 5.8% (Figure 2). Influenza types and subtypes identified included: A(H1N1)pdm09 (n = 3),
A(H3) (n = 24), A(subtyping not performed) (n=2) and B(Victoria) (n=2). Over 61% (19/31) of positive specimens in this zone originated from Niger where AH3 (n=16) and A(H1N1)pdm09 (n=3) with a positivity rate of 25.7%.
