Lomé (Agenzia Fides) – If countries like Guinea-Bissau and Togo seem to get bogged down in post-election crises, just as many countries like Ivory Coast and Guinea Conakry go through chaotic pre-election moments. “One of the great evils that seriously undermines the political stability of our countries is the denial of the responsibility of rulers who continue to accuse themselves without ever accepting to fully assume their responsibilities and to play their role in transparency, truth and justice”, is the comment that Father Donald Zagore sent to Agenzia Fides on the recent presidential elections which saw the confirmation of President Faure Gnassingbé at the helm of the country (see Fides, 25/2/2020).
“It is essential to save our countries from the crises that precede and follow the political elections and to appeal to the wisdom, ethical sense and personal responsibility of African leaders”, stresses the theologian. “Africa is in crisis. It is necessary for every political actor to fully assume their responsibilities to allow the growth of our political systems. Beyond the power struggle, there are values such as peace and coexistence, inclusive dialogues, respect for fundamental human rights, as well as constitutions and above all the intrinsic dignity of the human person, which must always be preserved”.
