Kolowaré (Agenzia Fides) – The collaboration between missionaries and voluntary organizations, not necessarily of Christian inspiration, bears good fruit in Togo. This is what Silvano Galli, a priest of the Society for African Missions, tells Agenzia Fides. The missionary reports the valuable contribution offered by Dr. Gian Franco Mirri, a gynecologist from Imola (Italy) who has been working in Togo for years and who regularly visits Kolowaré. The doctor is part of the AVIAT (Association of Italian Volunteer Friends of Togo), a lay organization, composed of doctors, nurses and volunteers, founded in 2005, which has been operating in Togo for many years.
Father Galli announces: “On 20 and 21 November 2019 the technicians will go to Kolowaré to install a work station for dental care. Currently in Kolowaré – adds Fr. Galli – the ‘Artemisia’ project is also underway, a shrub useful for treating malaria, which is consumed in the form of herbal tea. An AVIAT volunteer will move to Kolowaré to take ten doses of Artemisia to take to the orphanage in Kpalimé”.
The missionary reports that the association is in contact with the Bishop of Sokodé, Mgr. Celestin Gaoua, in Adjengré, where the diocese is building a health center, and the bishop asked him for assistance and help.
AVIAT operates and intervenes in various areas, mainly healthcare. Volunteers in Togo pay constant attention to the needs of the population, guarantee antimalarial prophylaxis, HIV prevention, prevention and treatment of eye and dental diseases. It collaborates with existing health facilities run by religious, as well as with public dispensaries in isolated villages. It helps the young Togolese with small work projects and microcredit, with the construction of wells, schools, infrastructures. It also promotes meetings and initiatives for schools, groups, movements and the civil community to raise awareness of Africa and, in particular, Togo. (SG/AP) (Agenzia Fides, 19/11/2019)
