‘Taste of Africa’ returns to Killeen with annual event | Local News

The ninth annual “Taste of Africa” took place at the Killeen Civic and Convention Center Saturday.

Event organizer and Intelligent Minds Proving and Applying Commitment Outreach founder Rodney Duckett was excited about the event and all of its offerings.

“I like to call this a big family reunion,” Duckett said. “We have great food from all over Africa and lots of laughter and unity with each other. We hope it leaves a cultural footprint.”

There was local and international entertainment present with an African flair, including a cultural celebration dance from Panama, Ethiopian food and traditional dance, and Brazilion dance fighting. Ethiopian foods include misel, aleta and beef stew and was served by Lidetal Lemariam Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Duckett said Taste of Africa is an event were “African descendants gather to celebrate the expansive African histories and cultures that the continent has to offer. This family-centered celebration of African cultures will explore tantalizing tastes, vibrant fabrics and fashions, exotic jewels, handcrafted art, vibrant sounds, breathtaking dancing movement and other acts to show the audience an authentic cultural display.”

Experts were on hand to give randomly selected guests an African cultural makeover, as many people came to the event in bright, colorful traditional African clothing. African culture enthusiasts had an open market, mini-workshops, artists presentations, entertainment and lots of food available.

Duckett sais the event usually attracts 1,000 people and is a great cultural networking event. More than 100 people were at the event when the Herald visited the convention center around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The event lasted from noon to 6 p.m.

All proceeds will be donated to IMPAC Outreach, a local nonprofit preparing new developmental programing for youth in Central Texas.

This event is supported, in part, by funds from the city of Killeen, municipal hotel occupancy tax revenues and other funding sources.
