The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has launched an awareness campaign regarding the commencement of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train services at a brief event held at the Dar es Salaam SGR station on June 12, 2024.
The campaign aims to educate the public on the use of the new SGR services and important considerations for the safety and security of passengers and their belongings. The campaign’s slogan is “Let’s Board Our Train, Maintain It, and Cherish It.”
TRC Director General Masanja Kungu Kadogosa stated that, in implementing the directives of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, to ensure the commencement of train transport services, the TRC has taken steps to ensure the implementation of operational services.
“In accordance with the directive from the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Corporation informs the public of the commencement of initial SGR train services between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro on June 14, 2024,” said Kadogosa.
The Director General added that the start of passenger train services from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro follows TRC’s satisfaction with the readiness of the infrastructure, equipment (locomotives and coaches), and signalling and communication systems.
“The Corporation has conducted several trials to learn and fulfil legal requirements to ensure that the equipment, tracks, and communication systems meet efficiency and quality standards for passenger safety,” added Kadogosa.
In addition, Director General Kadogosa urged citizens to use train services, as passengers will be able to access all services within the train, including food, restrooms, conducive work environments while travelling, internet services, and entertainment.
CEO of Tanzania Commercial Bank (TCB) Adam Mihayo stated that TCB has worked closely with the TRC in the strategic SGR construction project to ensure that the needs of Tanzanians are met and to boost the country’s economy.
“In this strategic SGR construction project, TCB has collaborated with TRC in paying contractors and procuring locomotives and coaches from Germany. This has been a significant relief for us,” said Mihayo.
Mihayo added, “We have also entered into an agreement with TRC for the collection of payments through ticketing. The entire system will be managed by TCB, and cash collections will also be managed by our bank. As TCB, we promise Tanzanians that we will continue to provide excellent services in collaboration with TRC to meet the expectations of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.”
TRC Business Officer Liliani Mselle explained the methods for purchasing SGR train tickets through online platforms and ticket windows at SGR stations. TRC outlined the types and classes of trains to be used in the initial transport, including regular trains that will stop at every station from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and express trains that will travel non-stop from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro.
Additionally, for the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains, the following classes will be available: High Class, Economy Class, Business Class, and Royal Business Class.
SGR train services from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro are expected to officially commence on June 14, 2024.
