A four-man Uganda national amateur golf team, steps on the Chapman Golf course on Tuesday to try and win the Africa Zone V Golf Championship for the second time.
The Africa Region 5 Golf Championship is an annual national team event, which Uganda last won in 2015 when it was hosted at the Uganda Golf Club in Kampala.
Uganda which is officially a grouped under the Africa Region 4, is participating on special invitation in recognition of their strong showings over the years.
Uganda is fielding a new look team captained by Becca Mwanja alongside youngsters Joel Basalaine, Edrine Okwong and UPDF private Richard Baguma.
The Ugandan team arrived early in Zimbabwe on Friday to acclimatise and after Monday’s official practice round are ready to take on golfers from seven other African countries in the annual event that has been dominated by South Africa.
The Ugandans will take on golfers from Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa Swaziland and Zimbabwe.
The tournament starts with a seeding round (Stroke Play) and Longest Drive Competition on Tuesday before the quarter finals Match Plays (two singles and one foursome) in the morning and the semis (two Singles and one Foursomes), before the team returns to Kampala on Friday.
“It is our time and golf favours current form, so we are hopeful we are going to do our best for our country,” Baguma said after a familiarization round on the Chapman Golf Course on Saturday.
South Africa has won the tournament outright since inception with the exception of 1998 when the team tied with Zimbabwe in Swaziland but won on a count out of holes up.
Kenya, who won in Botswana in 2010, briefly interrupted their clean sweep with Uganda also winning on home soil in 2015. The Ugandans became the third country to win Africa’s premier golfing event behind South Africa and Kenya who won in 2010.
