sport

Shot putter Stefan Brink underlined South Africa’s dominance on the infield, while Botswana’s sprinter Pako Seribe also emerged a clear winner at the Southern Africa Regional Youth Championships.

This international contest featured athletes from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland and host Mozambique.

Boy’s Shot Put

Clearly in the best form of their young career, Brinks improved his personal best by 85 centimetres with winning effort of 19.93m. In similar fashion his team mate Ryno van Winkel also achieved a new distance heaving the implement to a distance of 19.37m.
“The weather was nice and warm. That gave me the incentive to make a big throw. We are preparing for the World Youth Championships in August. Our goal here is to at least win the gold and silver medals,” said Brink.

“We were greatly inspired when Jan Hoffman won the gold medal at the last World Youth Championships in Morocco. This time our goal is to make sure we keep the World Youth Shot Put title in South Africa” Van Winkel revealed.

Several career bests

The South African were in a rich vain of form in several field events clinching gold medal courtesy of career best performances. In the boy’s contests Ulrich Damon (69.95) and Boipelo Motlhatlhego (15.15) Javelin Throw and Triple Jump respectively. Discus thrower Linda Liebenburg (45.70) and javelin thrower Tazman Brits (56.55) broke new grounds.

A similar situation prevailed on the track with victories by Maruis Koekemoer (1:51.63) in 800m and Dean Swart (21.18) in 200m. Elsewhere Willem Voight cleared the bar at 2.05 to take the boys High Jump title.

Newcomer Alyssa Conley prevailed over the defending champion Bevan Smith in the girls 100m and 200m. Conley clocked 11.90 to Smith’s 12.29 in the shorther sprints. The taller Conley also prevailed in the 200m in a time of 23.83 to Smith’s 24.09.

“Our strategy has been to keep the athletes competition fit. They competed at the regional championship in Gaborone, Botswana three weeks ago. Now we are gearing up for the World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic in August,” says Elna de Beers one the six coaches with the team.

Boys 400m

Botswana’s Pako Seribe broke the monopoly of South African victories when he clinched the 400m title in 47.57. The father of the 16-year-old is the national coach for the 400m, and is quite confident about his prospects at the global event.

“Back at home I train with the senior 400m runners. Through this is tough training I have built confidence. I am looking forwards to the World Youth hampionships,” says Seribe.

Botswana’s most promising middle distance runner was Idah Phorisa who twice held off Swaziland’s Dudu Simelane to win the 1500m (4:39.56) and 3000m (9:53.20).
