UK Tried to Suppress Criticism of UAE Role in Sudan’s Civil War

UK officials allegedly tried to prevent criticism of the UAE’s alleged role in arming Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), one of the country’s warring parties that has been accused of ethnic cleansing in Darfur. Human rights lawyer Yonah Diamond, who held talks in Ethiopia on possible legal action against the UAE, made this claim. He stated that, during the talks, he heard from sources that the UK was using its influence to actively dissuade states from condemning the emirates. Diamond’s revelations led to accusations among diplomats that the UK prioritizes its relationship with the UAE over the safety of civilians in El Fasher, Darfur. The UK, through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development office, has since denied these claims as has the UAE on allegations it is supporting Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces. Despite the UAE’s denial, UN monitors have found credible accusations of its support for the RSF.
