Russia is backing both sides in Sudan’s civil war to achieve its ambition of a military base on the Red Sea.
Moscow has agreed to supply weapons to Sudan’s state army in exchange for a base on one of the world’s busiest shipping routes, while continuing to supply its enemy via pro-Kremlin mercenaries.
A delegation will travel to Russia this week to finalise an agreement for “vital weapons and munitions”, Yasser al-Atta, the assistant commander-in-chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) said. The deal reflects the scale of foreign meddling in a 13-month conflict that has pushed Sudan’s population to the brink of famine.
