The National Assembly is scheduled to sit on Friday, June 14, for lawmakers to be sworn into office and to elect a new speaker, deputy speaker, and president. Political parties aim to form a Government of National Unity after there was no outright election winner.
One of the country’s new parties – uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) – led by former President Jacob Zuma approached the country’s highest court to prevent the newly elected officials from sitting for the first time. The party is boycotting the Parliament sitting, alleging irregularities during May’s general elections.
The May elections resulted in the African National Congress (ANC) losing its parliamentary majority for the first time since taking power in 1994. The ANC is now in talks with other parties as they scramble to form a government of national unity.
