And there are other benefits to visiting then: aside from the bargains, the whales are back, fynbos blooming, aloes ablaze, and there are plenty of balmy days to offset the rain. If you’re travelling in the summer, plan ahead, and be prepared to spend more.
Renting an apartment or cottage is usually more affordable than a hotel, but be sure it’s well hosted, or opt for a smaller well-managed guest house – the advice and support of an on-site, readily available concierge-host can save money and improve your experience tenfold.
AirBnB has some excellent options across South Africa, but prices can be more transparent on booking.com, where you can easily filter by review score and price. Bear in mind that booking.com is an online agent, so wherever you book will have to pay them a commission. Assuming your choice has a website, write to enquire if they’d consider a 10 per cent discount on a direct booking; many local websites already offer this.
You’ll find plenty of high-rise cheap hotel options in the inner city, but large swathes are deserted at night or noisy by day. Best to book where there’s life after hours, like Cape Heritage Hotel (capeheritage.co.za), located in the heart of Bree’s restaurant and bar hub (from £149 per night B&B in summer).
More charming and peaceful choices are to be found in the residential suburbs skirting the city: Gardens, Oranjezicht, Tamboerskloof, De Waterkant. Kaap Mooi in lovely Tamboerskloof has rooms from £66 per night B&B in winter, and from £111 in summer (B&B). La Grenadine (lagrenadine.co.za), a charming little oasis off bustling Kloof Street, has rooms from £127 per night (B&B). But nearby Igadi House (igadihouse.com) – also a minute’s stroll from Kloof Street – is a real bargain: eight lovely rooms and inviting public spaces in a 19th-century Victorian home, where a “snugly” room costs from £137 per night (B&B).
