Saturday Market fave Horn of Africa set for Blues Fest

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Mohamed Yousuf proudly displays a wooden plaque that celebrates how his business, Horn of Africa, has been a staple at the Portland Saturday Market for 30 years.

“I am very proud of it. It’s my pride to be at Portland Saturday Market. Saturday Market is the best. I love it,” Yousuf told KOIN 6 News. “I’m proud of Portland. They are very supportive. When I first start, they come.”

Horn of Africa is also one of the vendors who return year after year to the Waterfront Blues Fest — and this year is no exception.

“The Blues Fest I consider the gift from Clay Fuller to Portlanders,” he said, referring to the Oregon Music Hall of Famer and longtime producer of the Waterfront Blues Fest before his death in 2022.

Coming to the Waterfront Blues Fest is also about carrying on a meaningful tradition.

“Horn of Africa will be there, no matter what,” he said. “Everything for vegan, for meat lover.”

There is one special menu item for this year’s Blues Fest. There will be his famous chicken and appetizers.

“But at the Blues, we serve lamb, too.”

Yousef does have one tip for people not familiar with the food from Horn of Africa. The spongy, pancake-like bread called Injera also works as an edible utensil.

“That’s your fork! If you come to my restaurant, I don’t have forks,” he said, laughing. “I will tell you, be ready to mess with your food. So mess with it, eat it, and it tastes really good with your finger.”

Seriously, they will give you a fork if you prefer.

The Waterfront Blues Festival begins July 4 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.
