Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha is a British overseas territory in Western Africa. Located in the South Atlantic, the territory consists of the island of Saint Helena, the Ascension island and the archipelago of Tristan da Cunha, which includes the Gough Island.
Discovered by Galician navigator João da Nova in 1502, St. Helena became a Crown colony in on April 22, 1834. The Ascension Island became a dependency of St. Helena on September 12, 1922 and Tristan da Cunha followed suit on January 12, 1938.
The three island groups were formerly known as St. Helena and Dependencies, which was renamed as St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha on September 1, 2009 when the two dependencies were raised to equal status with St. Helena. The territory’s incumbent and 69th governor Philip Rushbrook assumed office on May 11, 2019.
