Global leaders to meet in Rwanda for Africa Food Summit

WORLD leaders, innovators, development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and private sector representatives from across Africa and beyond will convene in Rwanda for the annual Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) September 2 to 6.

This year’s summit, themed “Innovate, Accelerate, and Scale: Delivering Food Systems Transformation in a Digital and Climate Era,” will spotlight innovations and technologies, policies, delivery mechanisms, best practices, business models, and investments aimed at accelerating food systems transformation in Africa, with a focus on youth and women.

The meeting will emphasize harnessing technologies, innovative policies, and business models to revolutionize agricultural practices and food production systems.

“Accelerate” highlights the urgency of collective action to expedite sustainable food system transformations through technological advancements and innovative solutions, according to Amath Pathé Sene, Managing Director of the AFS Forum.

These pillars collectively provide a comprehensive framework for driving meaningful change in Africa’s food systems. Leaders at this year’s summit will also address the urgent need to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and fulfill the Malabo Declaration’s commitments by 2025.

The event will be attended by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, along with several current and former presidents, ministers, and key figures from both the government and the private sector.

Their participation underscores the high-level commitment to tackling critical issues facing Africa’s food systems.

This year’s summit offers a unique platform for stakeholders to share insights and forge partnerships that will lead to actionable outcomes. “It is through such collective efforts that we can address the pressing challenges of climate change, food insecurity, and economic inclusivity,” said Sene.

Rwanda’s Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente, who officially launched the forum in March, called for a transformation in agriculture to make it a powerful engine of economic development.

“To transform the agriculture sector into a significant driver of economic growth, our country is embracing innovation and making evidence-based policy decisions. The Government is focused on de-risking the sector to enhance its profitability and attractiveness for youth and private sector participants,” said Dr. Ngirente.

The summit will feature a comprehensive program, including plenary sessions, thematic forums, side events, and leadership exchanges.

It provides a forward-looking platform for actionable dialogue and peer learning as stakeholders address the urgent need for innovative solutions to transform food systems in Africa.
