Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Gusau said that “major steps” will be taken in a bid to ensure that the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Ibrahim Gusau has promised major changes just a week after the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against South Africa.
The teams faced one another in a 2026 World Cup qualifier last week Friday and after sharing the spoils with Hugo Broos’ charges, the side led by Finidi George then suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Benin which saw them drop to fifth spot in Group C.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finalists have gone winless in all four of their qualifiers played so far, drawing three and losing one.
Reports suggest that the side’s latest results have brought about increasing pressure on the current Nigeria manager, who officially replaced Jose Peseiro in April.
It has also been suggested that the NFF could employ a technical advisor who would outrank George and see him having to give up the control he currently possesses.

What is certain, however, is that steps will be taken to ensure a turn around in results, according to the federation’s president.
“It’s a very sad moment for Nigerian football, we can’t run away from that. But we are working tirelessly in connection with the minister to see that we come out with some holistic measures that will change the face of the entire system so that we can move forward,” Gusau said per Soccernet.ng.
“Qualifying for the World Cup is still possible, and I want to assure you that we are going to fight it to the letter, and Nigeria are going to qualify for the World Cup.
“Very soon, you’re going to see the major steps that the NFF will come out with. And by the grace of God, those major steps will lead us to qualify for the World Cup.”
