Abuja (Agenzia Fides) – More than 200 pupils (some sources say 232) were kidnapped this morning, March 7, in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, in northern Nigeria.
The hostages are pupils from the LEA primary school in Kuriga. Around 8.30 a.m., after the school assembly, an armed commando stormed the facility and took not only the children, but also some staff, including the headmaster, into the nearby forest.
The junior and secondary schools had already moved to the school building in the town of Kuriga a few years ago due to security problems, abandoning a school outside the city. Meanwhile, Kuriga was already the scene of a tragic attack in January this year when Mallam Idris Abu Sufyan, headmaster of Kuriga Government Secondary School, was killed by armed bandits while trying to resist the kidnapping. The perpetrators managed to escape with two women as hostages, including the wife of the murdered headmaster. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 7/3/2024)
