Following the first gathering of the three nations, the military leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger repeated that they have no plans of rejoining the West Africa regional bloc. The Sahel states left the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in January, saying the body is “being manipulated by former colonial ruler France”.
Niger’s military leader Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani, who spoke on behalf of the group, said ECOWAS has become “a threat to our states”. The military leaders agreed to strengthen their union, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which was created in 2023 during fractured relations with their neighbors.
