Namibia got knocked out of the 2024 T20 World Cup following a 41 run defeat against England and subsequently, veteran all-rounder David Wiese called it quits on his international cricketing career.

With Super 8 qualification at stake, defending champions England set a 123-run target for Namibia in a rain-hit game that was reduced to 10 overs per side.

However, despite prolific all-rounder David Wiese’s blistering 27 runs knock, Namibia fell 41 runs short and were officially knocked out of the tournament as England advanced to the next stage.

That being said, David Wiese, 39, formally announced his retirement from international cricket following the 41-run loss against England. Wiese began his professional journey with South Africa before becoming a household name in Namibia.

In 34 T20Is played for his side, Wiese scored over 500 runs and chipped in 35 wickets. In the ongoing T20 World Cup, Wiese’s all-round contributions in the game and super over against Oman turned out to be a major highlight of the tournament.

However, Father Time has got the better of David Wiese as he feels the time is right for him to hang his boots. He does not feel any more cricket is left in him at the age of 39. And the T20 World Cup was the ideal platform for him to bow out on a high.

“Yeah, yeah, for now. I mean, next year’s T20 World Cup is still two years away, I’m 39 years old now, so , in terms of international cricket, I don’t know if there’s much left in me. Obviously, I still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I’ve still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play.”

“But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me personally with Namibia. I’ve had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time,” said Wiese.

David Wiese expressed his gratitude for an opportunity to represent a passionate team like Namibia and to be able to compete with prolific teams like England was an absolute dream come true.
