South Africa’s fight against cross-border crime on the troubled KwaZulu-Natal province border with Mozambique has intensified, with the provincial government’s partial construction of a concrete barricade spanning eight kilometers and the deployment of over 140 police officers.
Police Minister Bheki Cele announced on July 24, 2023, the arrest of notorious criminals who were terrorising communities in the far north of KwaZulu-Natal and who were involved in the hijacking of vehicles from police stations, clinics and hospitals. This has led to protests by the people who suspect collusion between some police officers and criminals.
