Morocco leads Maghreb countries in the Energy Transition Index

Morocco leads Maghreb countries in the Energy Transition Index

Out of 120 countries, Morocco ranks 65th in the World Economic Forum’s «Fostering Effective Energy Transition 2024» report. This report assesses the current performance and enabling environment for energy systems in individual countries.

While Morocco has made strides in efficiency and clean energy, the pace of transition has slowed down. This trend reflects recent concerns about energy justice amidst rising energy prices. Geopolitical risks further challenge energy security.

In the index, Morocco scores 54.9 out of 100. The country performs better in system performance (60.5 points) compared to readiness for transition (46.5 points).

Morocco a regional leader

Within the Arab world, Morocco sits at number five, surpassing Qatar (50th globally), the Emirates (52nd), Saudi Arabia (58th), and Oman (62nd). In Africa, Morocco takes second place behind Mauritius (53rd) and ahead of several nations like Kenya (70th) and South Africa (84th). Morocco leads the Maghreb region, followed by Tunisia (89th) and Algeria (91st).

Globally, the top ten positions are dominated by European countries, with Sweden holding the top spot. The report highlights that despite a slowdown in innovation growth, countries like China and India are at the forefront of developing new energy solutions and technologies. Notably, both advanced economies (China, Brazil) and developing countries aligned with transition goals continue to perform well.
