Reopened in October 2023 after a year of renovation, the new LUX* Belle Mare has a familiar boutiquey feel, but is more sophisticated than before. The ocean view, sweeping endlessly beyond the infinity pool, provides significant wow-factor on arrival, and new temple-like shingle rooves with cathedral ceilings cut through to let in the light.
Mauritian designer, Jean-Marc Tang has reimagined the hotel’s modern-colonial, sea-facing suites, villas and public areas in a minimalism-meets-tropical design, with soothing nature-inspired pastel shades of sand white, coral and green. Hand-glazed, pale-green tiles decorate the arches of the riad-style lobby while contemporary frescoes inspired by Indian folk art feature at Amari, the hotel’s contemporary Indian restaurant. The hotel’s Aperitivo Bar is a neutral, chic space with a counter bar made from reclaimed sand; it’s a great spot for an Aperol spritz.
There’s an element of theatre and fun at this cool hotel: a Hooper limousine 1933 Rolls Royce, used for Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s visit to the island, is parked in the grounds and an authentic rum shack – with salvaged wood and broken glass windows – is available for tastings by the pool in the afternoon. The hotel offers a “PhotoFanatic” studio which loans equipment such as GoPros and provides phone tuition to capture that perfect shot. Sustainable initiatives range from learning about marine conservation with NGO Eco-Sud to refillable own brand natural toiletries in bathrooms, which are refreshingly different and really rather good. Keep your eyes peeled for the property’s “Tree of Wishes”, a tradition traced backed to numerous world cultures.
