AFRICA/MAURITIUS – Coronavirus; Cardinal Piat: “Let us follow authority guidelines and intensify prayer”
Port-Louis (Agenzia Fides) – “Although confinement is difficult, I ask for strict compliance with authority guidelines. In doing this, we will respect our brothers and sisters”, says Cardinal Maurice Piat, Bishop of Port-Louis in his message, in which he invites the population to strictly follow the guidelines of the authorities to prevent the spread of the coronavirus that causes the COVID-19 disease.
The Cardinal had already ordered on March 19 that churches will remain closed until further notice and only 20 people will be authorized to participate in funeral celebrations. “At the moment the churches will no longer welcome the faithful”, announced Cardinal Piat, who added “we are invited to open our hearts to others and to pray for them”. In particular, “let us pray for the elderly and the sick who are the most vulnerable; let us pray for doctors and healthcare workers who are put to the test; we pray for those whose economic situation is already affected by the epidemic; let us pray for those who live in difficult conditions of misery or loneliness”.
All the religious leaders of the island have decided to collaborate with the authorities to implement prevention measures. The President of the Jummah Nissar Ramtoolah Mosque said that “guidelines on precautions to be taken are already in place in mosques”.
In Mauritius, 28 coronavirus cases have occurred since March 18 and 2 patients have died.
The island has closed its airport, its ports and from March 23 to April 2 a curfew has been decreed.
The Prime Minister warned that during the curfew, only people with a special permit issued by the police commissioner will be able to move. Others will be subject to penalties. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 24/3/2020)
