Malian opposition politicians in exile have announced the formation of an interim government following the expiry of the deadline set by the country’s military junta to return to democratic rule. This “civil transition (government) is the only legitimate one in Mali”, the group is reported to have said in a statement.
The junta, which seized power in 2020, promsied to return the country to civilian rule by March 6, 2024, but has now taken “series of anti-democratic measures” intended to consolidate its grip on power, including the suspension of political actvities.
Mali’s junta has issued a decree suspending political party activities and associations of a political nature indefinitely, citing the need to maintain public order.
