Councilor’s visit to Africa-Madagascar Region

Manzini, eSwatini – February 2023 – Following the installation of the new Superior of the ZMB Vice-Province, Fr. Michael Mbandama, the Councilor for the Africa-Madagascar Region, Fr. Alphonse Owoudou, made a brief visit to Maputo, Mozambique, on his way to the Kingdom of eSwatini (formerly Swaziland). Passing through Maputo, Fr. Owoudou attended the inauguration of the pastoral year of the entire Salesian Family at St. Joseph Parish in Maputo. A few days ago, after crossing the border, he visited Manzini, eSwatini, on behalf of the Rector Major, where he met the five Salesians of the Salesian work, as well as the educational and pastoral community and lay members of the Salesian Family. Among the activities he was able to experience with the young people of the school was a sports morning at the Don Bosco High School in Manzini, in the “Mavuso Sports Center,” where teachers, coaches, and students were busy with a liturgical animation, several speeches and the chance to appreciate the sports prowess of the young Swazis, especially in sprint and long-distance races. eSwatini is the second largest of the three countries that make up the Salesian Vice-Province of Southern Africa (AFM). A small kingdom among the fifty or so states of Africa, a Salesian “nursery” or hub where many of the elite have passed through Salesian schools and “Don Bosco Youth Care,” and a real challenge today to give the same opportunities to flourish to the young, the real “leaven” for the eSwatini and Africa of tomorrow.
