Into Africa: ClearVue forges new path for solar glass

ClearVue Technologies has launched its solar integrated glass units (IGUs) into the vast African market after signing an exclusive five-year deal to have its products distributed in South Africa, Lesotho and Botswana – which are all notably part of the world’s hottest continent.

The West Perth-based company’s products are aimed at reducing temperature and costs in buildings, easing electrical grid loads and helping establish other new industries. It revealed today that it had appointed Johannesburg-based renewable energy company Concept Business Group, which will also have non-exclusive rights in other African territories.

ClearVue says the agreement sits in line with South African Government initiatives designed to help businesses contribute to a more sustainable energy future and a transition to renewable solutions to offset significant challenges for the nation’s energy grid.

The company believes its technology could be a key player in the transition, particularly during the yearly seasonal bouts of constant air-conditioner operation.

The market opportunity in Africa is immense as the region looks for solutions to enhance their existing energy infrastructure. South Africa in particular faces significant challenges with its energy grid. Importantly, our products are easily integrated into existing manufacturing capability, with no modifications to industry-standard glazing production lines with minimal impacts on production time.

Mr Deil said the agreement backed up the company’s recent commercial progress in southern Asia through the appointment of another distributor. He believed it demonstrated the growing global need for the solar glass technology, which had been shown to improve energy efficiency and a reduction in carbon emissions.

ClearVue anticipated leveraging Concept’s significant local business and social connections to distribute its electricity-generating glazing technology that is positioned to help accelerate the use of energy-efficient windows.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) cells are incorporated around the edges of IGUs used in windows. The lamination interlayer between the glass in an IGU incorporates ClearVue’s patented nano and micro particles, in addition to its spectrally-selective coating on each unit’s rear external surface.

The South African Government has made no secret of its desire to assist businesses to adopt more sustainable and environmentally friendly options to usher in a cleaner future, while also addressing imperatives to reduce loads on the nation’s existing electrical infrastructure.

So, ClearVue’s window technology has emerged as something of a white knight and even has the potential to help revolutionise South Africa’s agricultural practices following its recent successful two-year trial installation of its solar glass units at a greenhouse at Perth’s Murdoch University.

The company said the trial showed a reduction in building energy use of up to 40 per cent when compared to a conventionally glazed building, in addition to significant cost offsets in glasshouse operations and a capacity to produce surplus power for storage or power reticulation.
