Internet users in Kenya should experience improved internet connectivity and speeds after Airtel Africa, through its wholesale arm Airtel Telesonic, activated the initial phase of the 2Africa submarine cable that links Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.
2Africa is the world’s largest subsea cable network, stretching over 45,000 kilometres and linking Europe with Africa and large parts of South Asia.
“Airtel is proud to launch the first phase of 2Africa cable system. This project not only underscores our commitment to investing in advanced infrastructure but also our dedication to empowering communities with the tools they need to thrive in the digital age,” Airtel Telesonic CEO Prasanta Das Sarma said.
2Africa is implementing a new technology that allows for the deployment of up to 16 fibre pairs instead of the eight supported by older technologies.
China Mobile International, Meta, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, stc, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone and WIOCC partnered to build 2Africa.
