Kenya Unveils Africa Centre for Digital and AI Skilling, Led by UNDP and Microsoft

The Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Skilling has been launched through a collaboration between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Government of Kenya, and Microsoft. Located at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi, the Centre aims to enhance public sector innovation across Africa by equipping civil servants with advanced digital and AI skills.

David Ombee, Project Communications Officer at UNDP Kenya, highlighted the Centre’s role in driving digital transformation across the continent. Inspired by Bangladesh’s a2i initiative, the Centre adopts a hub-and-spokes model to spread its impact beyond Kenya, reaching other African nations to improve governance and service delivery.

In line with Kenya’s National Digital Master Plan 2022-2032, the Centre will provide training in systems thinking, problem-solving, and strategic foresight to prepare public servants for future challenges. Global tech leaders like Microsoft and Google are offering expertise to keep the Centre at the forefront of digital innovation.

A Public Sector Innovation Fund will also support civil servants in applying their new skills to solve real-world problems, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The Centre is aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, promoting quality education, decent work, and reduced inequalities.

The Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling marks a key step in Africa’s digital transformation, enhancing governance and economic growth across the region.
