AFRICA/IVORY COAST – The contribution of the Church to the formation of new generations through education

Gagnoa (Agenzia Fides) – The Bishops of the Ivory Coast, gathered at the 120th Plenary Assembly, are debating these days on the centrality of the new generations and on a global educational project that looks at the integral development of the person. But above all they are dealing with the topic of the Church’s contribution to the formation of young people, within the framework of a global educational project.
“In order to succeed in what seems to us the most urgent challenge, education is not one more means among others, but it is the essential means: for this we need a well thought out educational plan, designed and organized on solid foundations, on certain values”, explained Msgr. Ignace Bessi Dogbo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Korhogo and President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Ivory Coast, in his opening speech, sent to Fides.
In this sense, the Ivorian Bishops have been working for months on a pastoral letter on education. During the meetings organized in the different dioceses, the aim is to best calibrate the catechesis to participate in an educational project that can contribute to the renewal of the country through the formation of new generations. The objective goes hand in hand with the government’s vision, which aims to promote an educational system capable of “forming complete men and women and respectful and responsible citizens”. “The theme of education – said Msgr. Bessi Dogbo – is a great challenge that requires in-depth reflection on the model of society that must be built and on the means to achieve a good education, but it also puts the whole of man in the”.
The main objective of the Assembly of the Bishops’ Conference, which will continue until Sunday and will end with a Eucharistic celebration in the Cathedral – is to review the contents of the catechesis. Among other issues that the bishops are studying, there are also some important ones related to the University of Yamoussoukro. The Ivorian bishops will also take stock of the perspectives of the synod on synodality and will discuss the five-year pastoral plan of the Church 2017-2023. (SS/EG) (Agenzia Fides, 27/01/2022)
