TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s U-23 national team coach, Shin Tae-yong, considered the difference in squad depth a key factor in Iraq’s victory.
Indonesia, which has debutant status, lost 1-2 to Iraq in the match for third place in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Doha, Qatar, on Thursday night, May 2.
“I think Iraq played quite well in the second half. We can all see in all the matches that we are not solid enough in individual performance,” Shin Tae-yong said in the post-match press conference.
“There is a difference in the level of individual performance. In every game, we play almost the same eleven players. Maybe it’s difficult for our team to match their level,” said the South Korean coach.
Garuda Muda took the lead through Ivar Jenner’s goal in the 19th minute before Zaid Tahseen Hantoosh equalized in the 27th minute. Iraq turned things around when Ali Jasim’s goal in the first extra time changed the score to 2-1.
Despite losing to Iraq, Marselino Ferdinan and friends still have the opportunity to seal a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics through the play-off match route.
Indonesia will compete for fourth place in the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations, Guinea, on May 9 next week in France.
Shin Tae-yong said he will focus on restoring the players’ stamina in the next 2-3 days before preparing strategies and analysis ahead of the match against Guinea.
“Of course the players look tired and out of stamina, I think for the next 2-3 days they will focus on recovery. I will try my best to take advantage of the opportunities available and bring this team to secure a place at the Olympics,” Shin Tae-yong said.
