Guinea-Bissau’s longstanding coach, Baciro Cande, will step down from his role as the national team’s head coach when his contract expires next month.
The country’s football federation has confirmed that the 56-year-old’s contract will not be renewed following Guinea-Bissau’s premature exit from the group stage at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Djurtus (Wild Dogs) finished at the bottom of Group A after suffering defeats in all three of their matches.
Baciro Cande took charge of the West African side in March 2016 and successfully guided them to qualification for four consecutive Nations Cup finals. However, despite their consistent appearances, Guinea-Bissau has failed to secure a victory in 12 matches at the tournament, dating back to their debut in 2017 in Gabon.
Cande joins the ranks of coaching casualties from the 2023 AFCON, including Rui Vitoria of Egypt, Djamel Belmadi of Algeria, Tom Saintfiet of Gambia, Chris Hughton of Ghana, Jalel Kadri of Tunisia, and Jean-Louis Gasset of Ivory Coast, all of whom have parted ways with their respective teams.
