AFRICA/GUINEA – The church of St. Joseph the Worker destroyed after fuel depot fire
Conakry (Agenzia Fides) – “The church of St. Joseph the Worker, located 500 meters from the fuel depot that caught fire on the night of December 17 to 18 has been completely destroyed” local Church sources report to Fides from Conakry, the capital of Guinea.
The violent fire destroyed the country’s main fuel depot (see Fides, 18/12/2023). Although firefighters managed to control the situation after hours of intense efforts to extinguish the flames, according to Fides sources “the exact cause of the fire is still unknown.” In addition, “the closure of gasoline pumps, ordered by the government after the incident, has significantly reduced traffic on the roads.”
All this suggests “a fuel shortage not only in Conakry, but throughout the country, since the destroyed depot was crucial for the distribution of fuel imported from abroad,” the sources add. As a consequence, transportation prices have already risen and growth in the black fuel market is anticipated. Finally, the government warns of possible power outages in the coming days. (L.M.)
