Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, has been hit by a power crisis due to an unpaid electricity bill of $17 million owed to Turkish utility company Karpowership. Karpowership, one of the world’s largest floating power plant operators, has a five-year contract to supply the majority of Guinea-Bissau’s electricity.
The company decided to disconnect the power supply as a result of the outstanding debt. Economy Minister Suleimane Seidi has promised to pay most of the bill within two weeks to restore electricity to the city. This isn’t the first time Karpowership has taken such action; in the past, they cut off power to Sierra Leone’s capital due to a substantial unpaid debt.
