Digitalization, the future of work and the teaching profession

Digitalization, the future of work and the teaching profession

In November 2019, the ILO and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) launched a research initiative to examine how digital technologies are impacting learning and the work of educators in Africa. The initiative – Digitalization, the future of work and the teaching profession – was developed to understand how education systems have been impacted and are responding to rapid transformations in the world of work, primarily as a result of technological advancements. It focused on five countries in Eastern Africa – Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda and the United Republic of Tanzania – and examined the period before and the early responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, producing ten studies as well as a synthesis report. The initiative draws on the ILO Centenary Declaration for the Future of Work, 2019 and principles of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, 1966.
