Four candidates have registered to run in Egypt’s presidential election scheduled to be held in December, according to the country’s National Election Authority (NEA).
The four include incumbent president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Farid Zahran, Abdel-Sanad Yamama and Hazem Omar.
Registration closed on Friday, and NEA is expected to publish the initial list of candidates on Monday after scrutinizing the applications.
Potential candidates must secure endorsements from at least 20 members of parliament or 25,000 citizens from at least 15 governorates.
President el-Sisi will be running for a third term following constitutional amendments passed in 2019 that extended the length of presidential terms to six years from four, paving the way for him to stay in office until at least 2030.
Voting in Egypt is scheduled to take place from December 10-12, while Egyptians abroad will cast their votes on December 1-3.
Election results are expected to be announced on December 18 and, in the event of a run off round, final results should be announced on January 16, at the latest.
