Egypt: el-Sisi Opponent Bags One-Year Prison Sentence

Reports reveal that Ahmed Altantawy, a prominent political activist who dared to challenge Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in last year’s election, has been handed a harsh one-year prison sentence by an appeal court.

Khaled Ali, a respected lawyer, disclosed that Altantawy, a former presidential candidate, was apprehended by security forces at the Cairo court following the ruling. This verdict comes after Altantawy and 22 of his associates, including his campaign manager, were convicted and sentenced in February for distributing unauthorised endorsement forms during his candidacy bid. Alongside the prison term, he faces a ban from participating in national elections for the next five years.

Ali further informed that the court reaffirmed these sentences on Monday, cementing Altantawy’s legal predicament. Altantawy withdrew from the presidential race in 2023, citing the inability to gather the required number of voter signatures necessary for nomination. He alleged that state security services systematically harassed his staff and supporters, impeding his path to meeting the candidacy threshold.

Meanwhile, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi secured a resounding victory for a third term, further solidifying his hold on power.
