10 African countries with the least soft power influence over the world

Power is not simply the “ability or right to control people or things”, but crucially it is also the possession of influence over others and the “ability to act or produce an effect”.

The Global Soft Power Index defines soft power as a nation’s ability to influence the preferences and behaviours of various actors in the international arena (states, corporations, communities, public etc.) through attraction or persuasion rather than coercion.

While often associated with cultural rather than business influence, Soft Power plays a pivotal, and increasingly clear, role in promoting trade and attracting foreign investment.

The soft power index, now in its fifth iteration with the 2024 edition, gathered responses from over 170,000 people across more than 100 countries, surveying perceptions of 193 countries brands from around the world.

The metrics of soft power are broken down into eight main pillars: Business & trade, international relations, education & science, culture & heritage, governance, media & communication, sustainable future, and people & values.

In Africa, Egypt leads with a soft power index score of 44.9, while Djibouti ranked lowest in terms of soft power influence with a score of 23.7. It was followed by Eritrea at 24.2 and Somalia at 25.2.
