Escalating violence and health crisis in Kivu
On 24 July, suspected armed groups attacked the locality of Beumanyama near Oicha in North Kivu, in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, killing 20 civilians, according to local authorities. This incident brought the total number of people killed between 16 and 25 July to 57, following a series of attacks on 16 July in several villages, which resulted in 37 deaths in the Oicha health zone. Humanitarian sources reported that over 1,000 people fled to safe localities in Oicha, Mayimoya, and Mbau after the incident. Meanwhile, on 25 July in South Kivu, humanitarian organisations expressed concerns over water-borne diseases in 12 Internally Displaced Person sites, hosting a total of 47,000 people in the Minova zone, due to poor hygiene and sanitation conditions. Between 15 and 21 July, the Minova health zone reported four cholera cases, in addition to five the week before. The South Kivu Provincial Coordination recommended that humanitarian partners conduct a needs assessment.

Deadly attack in Benin’s W National Park
An attack in Benin’s W National Park claimed 12 lives between 24 and 25 July 2024. Among the victims were five African Parks Rangers and seven Beninese Armed Forces members. The incident occurred near the Mékrou River, in northern Benin, close to the border with Niger, a biodiverse region facing growing insecurity. African Parks confirmed the attack on 27 July and measures are being taken to identify the bodies and inform the families of the deceased Rangers.

Number of households affected by floods in Bla increases
The number of people affected by flooding in Bla town, in Segou region, since 26 July has significantly increased from 6,019 (404 households) to 8,700 (770 households), with 70 per cent being women and children. On 29 July, regional authorities held a second meeting to coordinate the response to the floods. While regional authorities focus on finalising the biometric registration of affected households, partners are positioning themselves to respond to the needs of victims in different sectors. These include food assistance, nutritional support, non-food items, health services, water, sanitation and hygiene kits. The main concerns remain the evacuation of water from the city and the repair of damaged water points and latrines to prevent potential water-borne disease outbreaks.
Burkina Faso
Supply of Dori, Arbinda and Gorgadji cities
About 700 trucks carrying food and non-food items, escorted by the Burkinabè Defense and Security Forces, arrived in Arbinda (Soum Province), Dori (Seno Province) and Gorgadji (Soum Province) cities in the Sahel region, in the north of the country on 24 July. These trucks had been waiting for a month in Dori, according to local sources. Access to these cities in the Sahel is challenging due to non-state armed group activity and improvised explosive devices’ risks on the roads. The trucks, which reached Arbinda, Dori and Gorgadji, are part of the new supply convoy of about 1,000 trucks leaving Burkina Faso for Niger. Humanitarian actors in the Sahel region are contracting private carriers who join escorted convoys to deliver humanitarian inputs to hard-to-reach areas.
