Mauritius says the UK’s handing over of the long-contested Chagos Islands draws an important line under the archipelago’s colonial history. The remote Indian Ocean islands were Britain’s last African colony. The UK severed the Chagos Islands from Mauritius in 1965 and up to 2,000 Chagossians were expelled to make way for a military base. Mauritius says it’s high time the colonial bullying was addressed. Now some Chagos islanders want to return to their ancestral home.
Also in the programme, Ethiopian drivers shift to a greener mode of transport. A ban on the import of petrol and diesel cars is encouraging motorists to plug in. But in a country where the power supply is not always reliable, keeping an electric car at full charge can be a challenge.
And we speak to the founder of the Ghana-based cultural and educational NGO NACSA, whose mission is to safeguard and share Africa’s vast, complex and fascinating history. It works throughout the continent and diaspora to deepen understanding in order to better prepare Africa for its future.
