State Secretary Tristan Azbej (L) in Chad
Hungary is providing 100,000 euros in aid to Chad in the Sahel region of Central Africa, where more than 200,000 refugees are residing who have fled the conflict in Sudan, the State Secretary responsible for programs to help persecuted Christians announced.
Speaking to ATV news on the spot, Tristan Azbej said this is the first cooperation between the two countries and the aid is aimed at providing basic needs for people fleeing the civil war in Sudan.
László Eduárd Máthé, the Ministerial Commissioner responsible for coordinating foreign policy in the sub-Saharan region, said that
for Hungary and for Europe, the stability of the regions around it is a key issue”, and supporting countries that are still stable in the Sahel region is therefore a priority foreign policy objective.
Tristan Azbej pointed out that refugees fleeing the conflict in Sudan had overcrowded refugee camps in Chad, creating a humanitarian emergency. The Hungarian assistance aims to help refugees and their host communities in Chad and to support initiatives to foster peaceful interfaith coexistence.
Africa’s future affects our future. Our principle is not to bring trouble to Europe, but to bring help to where the trouble is,”
the State Secretary stressed.
In Sudan, fighting broke out in mid-April between the army led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, de facto leader of Sudan who seized power in October 2021, and the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
Four to five thousand refugees are reportedly arriving in Chad daily from neighboring Sudan. Mahamat Yacoub, chairman of the Chadian migration committee, said that the refugees were short of food, drinking water and tents.
