Heavy rainfall and floods in Bangui, capital and largest city of the Central African Republic, destroyed around 100 houses and left nearly 3,000 people in need of emergency aid.
The heavy rain fell on 07 August 2021. According to reports by public radio station, Radio Ndeke Luka (RNL), most of the damage occurred in southern districts of the capital, a city of around 900,000. Rain and floods caused walls and roofs of homes to collapse, forcing many to evacuate. The government said it is distributing relief supplies in affected areas.
This is the second flood event to strike in the city within a few weeks. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported flooding following heavy rain in the city from 19 to 23 July, 2021. Over 300 people from 66 families were affected. The municipalities of Bimbo, Bangui 6th arrondissement, Bangui 2nd arrondissement and Bangui 7th arrondissement were flooded. Over 60 houses were damaged and collapsed as a result of heavy rain and floods in Bimbo. IOM said stagnant water and mud remained for days in some areas, increasing risk of waterborne diseases.
IOM added in a report of 29 July that the locality of Bossongo (55 km from Bangui), was affected by floods following the rains of 18 July 18, 2021. Sixty households were evacuated to safer areas.
Three people were reported missing after floods in Bangui in May 2020
Severe flooding struck in the country in October 202 after a period of heavy rain caused rivers, including the Ubangi, to overflow. By mid-November, flooding had destroyed 10,000 homes and impacted 57,000 people, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). Many of those homes were in areas around the capital, Bangui.
