The massive improvements that Cape Verde have made as a footballing nation in recent years have finally paid off with a berth in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stages. They put together an absolutely stellar late-game comeback against Angola, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to notch a 2-1 win and progress in second place in Group A.
Nando put his team behind in the 33rd minute with an unfortunate own goal that couldn’t be avoided. He slid in to cut out a cross, and the ball took a crazy deflection off his heel before flying into the back of the net.
It took until the 81st minute, but Cape Verde finally broke through. Fernando Varela was the scorer, turning in a headed pass by Gege on a set piece. Heldon was his country’s big hero, taking advantage of a some poor goalkeeping in the first minute of stoppage time. Lama should have been able to claim a low cross that came in from the right flank, but could only push it away. Helton was in position to pounce and finished to record the biggest goal and biggest win in his country’s history.
