At least 23 people were killed in Cameroon’s capital, Younde, in floods that wrecked the city following heavy rainfall that forced a dam’s banks to burst, the Cameroonian army said Monday.
The dam gave way at around 16:00 p.m. (1500 GMT) local time on Sunday, releasing water from a small lake, Reuters reported citing a local leader in the Mbankolo neighbourhood.
Rescue operations were still underway on Monday as the military, emergency personnel and local residents joined hands to sift through the debris and fallen trees.
At least 30 houses were also destroyed in the floods, with roads also rendered impassable.
